GREEN BAY – And you wonder why Aaron Rodgers used to be so adamant about keeping his private life private.
It’s always hard to tell based on social media just how many folks truly espouse a certain theory. But there were more than a few Green Bay Packers fans suggesting in the wake of Sunday’s loss to the Detroit Lions that, like golfer Rory McIlroy, Rodgers might benefit from a breakup.
During his weekly radio show on 540 ESPN and ESPNWisconsin.com Tuesday afternoon, Rodgers dismissed the notions that his newfound romance with The Newsroom actress Olivia Munn has been an issue.
In August, McIlroy suggested that his decision to call off his wedding to tennis player Caroline Wozniacki had helped his game. After their breakup in May, McIlroy won the British Open and the PGA Championship.
“I think it has happened to me for the better. I’ve put a little bit more time into my golf and refocused me in a way,” McIlroy said after the second round of the PGA. “It’s the only thing – not the only thing I have; I’ve got my family and my friends – but I just immersed myself in my game. I’ve practiced hard and I’ve done all the right things, and I’m reaping the rewards.”
Later, McIlroy added: “I guess, what else do I have to do? I get up in the morning, I go to the golf course, I go to the gym. It’s just sort of – it’s just my life at the minute, you know. It obviously works pretty well, so I’m going to keep doing it.
“But I couldn’t say how much more time that I’ve spent. I always feel like I’ve practiced pretty hard and done the things that I’ve needed to do. Just seems like over the past couple of months, I’ve really just buried myself in my golf game and it seems to be working.”
Rodgers doesn’t see any comparison between his situation and McIlroy’s. He also scoffed at the suggestion that he is still bothered by the fractured left collarbone that forced him to miss essentially eight games last season.
“Those [arguments] are so idiotic, it’s not even worth responding to either one of those,” Rodgers said.
